Having just reviewed this book for a school project, I can't say that I enjoyed it too much. I found it to be, put plainly, bland, unable to stand up against Tolkien's other works. Also, as you said, Mim is a little fucker.

I quite enjoyed your analysis here. Having forgotten literally everything from The Silmarillion, and having not yet read Unfinished Tales, I really, really enjoyed The Children of Hurin. Granted, to begin with I had no idea what all these places were; for example, to me Nargothrond does not sound elvish at all so I had to adapt. But it reminded of why I love tolkien so much, and the dark nature of the story really worked. Not only this but the illustrations were awesome. I am surprised to see you complain about the lack of a 'clear' dragon in there, the one in my book is amazing! Interestingly, while reading it I also was thinking 'this could make a really awesome film' but it would only get my approval if it were handled extremely carefully.

Mel Brooks presents, "The Schmucky Children of Hurin," starring Will Ferrell as Turin Turambar, John Lithgow as Beleg, and Verne Troyer as Mini-Mim. Oy!

Well, maybe not a movie, but seeing as Tolkien seems to have done so well on the stage (even as a musical) as well as the screen, maybe Children of Hurin could be a new, more Othello-ish type play. Greek tragedies always thrive there, don't they? Lets see some Middle-Earth tragedies.

I was thinking about that the Hollywood bankability of the book too the other day. Personally, I think it could be a great film -- you've got a dragon, a hero with a cool helm and a cool sword, lots of battle sequences, etc. But given that it doesn't share any characters with LOTR and The Hobbit, and the book still isn't really a household name, I'm just not sure any studio would pay for the expense. Tragedies that hinge on incest don't exactly make people run to the box office.

Of course, that doesn't preclude a Sci-Fi Channel movie starring Matthew Fox from Lost wherein Túrin triumphs against Glaurung, recovers the Silmarils, and lives happily ever after with some anonymous woman who wasn't in the book.

(You know who might be able to get a fantastic Children of Húrin movie made? Don't laugh: Mel Gibson.)

I watched the whole trilogy with my wife over the weekend. Some of those scenes never fail to give me shivers..in a good and bad way. I wonder, with talk (and the inevitability) of making The Hobbit into a movie, I wonder if anyone will ever make The Children of Hurin into one. Too depressing, maybe? Not as approachable?
