I really like your observations concerning the difference in tone between Jackson and Tolkien. I agree pretty much completely - and have rarely seen it so well said!

There's something in what you say about despription of characters as well - I just hadn't thought about it - maybe that's why Jackson seems to have felt so free in how he describes them in the movies... "Thy're hardly described anyway, so I can turn them into whatever I want..." - B'cause that tendency might be what annoys me the most in the movies... - Faramir... - I say no more!

Interesting post & observations. Thank you for having written them; it was a pleasure to read. Took the liberty of writing a response to a few select points. As it's a bit on the long side, it's hoped that you won't mind my simply linking you to the response: http://ohilya.livejournal.com/97248.html

Cheers,

".........in an ideal world one would be able to discuss The Fellowship of the Ring without being overshadowed by Peter Jackson’s film of the
same name. "

Interesting as I have often felt same way.......I was one of the many who had not read the four books before I saw the films......but was so surprised to see how much Jackson ignored in his desperation to make it
Hobbits Inc.............I read The Hobbit first, my BIL insisted it was necessary to read it first, and after reading it, I came to understand that Jackson was actually making The Hobbits Meet Gollum featuring Sam, Frodo, Merry, Pipin.....and Gollum instead of FOTR, TT and ROTK.......
I understand that some of the actors were more than a little disappointed how much of their footage ended up on the editing floor so Jackson could add more and more Hobbit footage.........
Sad as there were some very interesting characters that were overlooked totally e.g. Glorfindel and Tom Bombadil and Goldberry etc.
Why not just name it The Hobbits Meet Goldum and then let the rest of us who really find them noxious find solace in films dedicated to the rest?

Consider this: in my edition of The Fellowship of the Ring, the Council of Elrond is 33 pages long. Gandalf’s infodump to Frodo in “The Shadow of the Past” stretches for about 17 pages.

I'm glad Peter Jackson considered and rejected Tolkien's "agenda." Would have made an awful movie...
