I quite agree with everything feldman writes in this piece, especially the shameful way our society’s culture promotes the whole thing in the first place. as for why the public is so interested? the term “the culture of celebrity” didn’t just fall out of the sky. north americans have no royalty or any real heroes, so celebs fill the blank where our need to admire goes. and the particular fascination with the downfall of celebrities? the german language has a word – “schaddenfreud” which roughly translates to “taking pleasure in the misfortune of others” or words to that effect. i guess it gets back to seeing someone else fall down makes us feel like we’re not such horrific screws-ups ourselves.

There just has to be a point of decency. Can’t there be? I mean, why do we consider this type of thing to be entertaining? It’s just sad. Yea. Paris Hilton. Then Britney Spears. We’ve got at least a few more years of prime self-destruction to sit back and enjoy. *sighs*
