I do wish that these sudden wrenches would not happen, as with this book and the latter books of Dune by F. Herbert. You love the setting and you want to travel in it, not for the sake of incredible adventures but the lucid-dream-like quality of the setting. And then you bump against cars and laser beams and too much sexuality. Herbert was not going mad or anything, either.

I can't help wondering if Peake didn't feel a similar disjunct coming "home" to England.

Matthew: Keep in mind that I'm just repeating the common wisdom about Peake and Titus Alone. (See, for instance, just about every review of the book written on the web.) I certainly think it's a valid question, considering how different this book is from its predecessors. But I agree with you, there's no need to think in terms of either-or. Peake was having mental challenges, and this book deliberately reflects that.

Even if the volume was unintentionally influenced by his illness, it's overly rude and probably medically false to dismiss it as madness. So these two opposing theories (intentional - declining capabilities) actually don't need to stand in such stark tension, but can both be a relaxed ground for discussion. But since Sebation Peake uttered his praise to this introduction, it's pretty clear now that Titus Alone can be considered a piece of art with a very deliberate vision.

For no better reason than that people rarely bother with this kind of thing, I thought I'd write and tell you how very much I enjoyed reading both your original post on, and this intro to, Titus Alone. It's a great work from a great mind and has long deserved better than the usual dismissal: 'Peake was going mad and fell on the third book'.

Thank you.

There. And it didn't even hurt! :)

beautiful preface for titus alone... i've just finished reading the titus trilogy-again- it never ceases to stun. am currently writing my thesis on peake, and am very interested in a theme you discuss- the grasp on reality that peake himself was tragically losing and what relation (if any) it had on the third- and most bizare i think- of the novels. interesting stuff.

[...] review reminds me that there are a lot of interesting things that can be said about Titus Alone. Here’s David Louis Edelman doing just that. However, I can’t help but note that Lang doesn’t go into much detail, but rather [...]
