To Wade. The normal route to turning on the touchpad is Start/All Programs/VAIO Control Centre/Keyboard & Mouse/Pointing Device then make sure Enabled is checked. If this doesn't work, try another post as there is a more complicated way which someone will find for you.

I'm trying to establish just what Setting Utility Series does and if it is a vital component. Can anyone tell me? I got my Vaio NW20SF just before Xmas and was instantly impressed by its speed (after removing the obvious crapware). However, performance has suddenly become a bit hesitant, particularly when some graphics or web pages are loading. Nothing serious, just the progress bar or a waiting message appearing briefly at the bottom of IE8, and complex pages loading bit by bit instead of almost instantly as before. This seems to have started after an update of SUS (to version 5.0.0.07300). I'm tempted to try the effect of removing SUS, but am reluctant without advice, particularly as David lists it as useful. (By the way, my broadband download speed is as fast as ever and not the culprit.)

I've spent 45 minutes reading all these posts and in that time have produced the backup discs that Sony kept reminding me to do when starting up. Why people here need to complain that they shouldn't have to spend hours creating backup discs is beyond me. Anyway, I can now happily and reassuringly use the partial re-install explained by several very helpful users here and have a clean 'n' crisp Win 7 NW Laptop. Many thanks to all for this site and the posts.

I bought a Sony Vaio late last year. After losing my job money got tight and I no longer used my laptop. Decided to go ahead and sell my laptop but purchaser will not buy without startup disc. I never opened the packet that contained all the information including the manual but it did not contain any disc whatsoever. Is this a joke on Sony's part or did I just get a laptop with no startup disc? I know you can create a disc but i shouldnt have to. Help is greatly appreciated.

now i would be willing to pay 50 bucks for them to include the OS cd, instead of me having to waste hours creating recovery media containing the bloatware.

also for derick : you may need to do the reinstall i just posted. then upgrade from the cd if you want just restart, and hold f10 at the splash screen, hit enter, then follow the directions above, or better yet find the post i went by , by doing a google search for vaio semi-clean install. and for the record, i just did a clean cd install of windows 7 on my vaio cr-320e and all the drivers work fine and it's waaay fastr, and just better in every possible way than vista. sony says they wont release win 7 drivers for thier vista laptops , but so far i havent had any issues using the original ones just install the sony drivers in the correct order. ( do a search for it)

i hae a sony vaio cr-320e with the same ton of bloatware. until i found a post online showing how to reinstall windows from the recovery partition but without all the junk. do a google search for "sony vaio semi-clean install " and it should be easy to find. basically you restart the laptop hit f10 to start recovery mode select restore entire hdd. let it do it until the screen changes to " installing drivers and software" or something similar and then hit ctrl+ alt+shift to bring up a task manager . go to the processes, and end the process labeled "launcher.exe" then just finish the installation. i've done this seversl times and it is the best/easiest / fastest way to just install windows, and the drivers for your laptop nothing else and then use your recovery disks to reinstall the instant on feature, and you are done. if there was a specific bloatware program you liked you can reinstall it as well. anyway hope this helps oh and i know it's a pain , and takes forever, but it really is a good idea to make recovery disks for your vaio otherwise it's near impossible to get instant -on back.

I keep a crapware list (like yours above) for my Sony Viao VGN folder. I've used several generations of Sony laptops/notebooks and found them to be built tough (like the old IBM Thinkpads) and attractive -- much better than HP and Dell notebooks, imho. BUT.. I absolutely dread any time I have to restore my Vaio hard drive (killed by malware that AV software cannot catch) knowing that I'll be spending many, many hours deleting all the crapware Sony include on their machines. Thanks for this post -- still relevant even after two years!
