Good point re the need for an occasional clean break, Al (the Second). I was pretty stunned when Apple managed to get away with it in OS X. I wish Microsoft wasn't always so hung up on backwards compatibility too.

IMHO, things should never break in incremental upgrades (like 2.1 to 2.2) if at all possible. If you're gonna make clean breaks, do it with a major point-oh increment.

Tagging will be built into wordpress 2.3.

When I attended Wordcamp recently, an update mechanism for plug-ins was discussed. They are working on it but I'm not sure if it is in 2.3 or not.

Backwards compatiblity: I hear ya since I've had stuff get completely broken before but, working in professional QA, compat is also one of the things that stops innovation in a lot of places. People get so mired in year after year of possibly insufficiently thought out design that they wind up in a box that they cannot get out of. I'd rather have them make a CLEAN break every so often (not every version) and move forward.

Speaking about security, it looks like it would be wise to upgrade to 2.2.3 now instead of waiting for 2.3:

Thanks, King Rat. Haven't gotten around to poking through the new features for 2.3 yet, but I'm definitely going to enjoy that tagging.

You're definitely right about the documentation. I meant to include that as one of the things badly in need of an overhaul, but, well, I forgot.

Wordpress 2.3, slated to be released in a couple of weeks, will have built in tagging support. I'm looking forward to playing with it. I generally like categories, but I use my categories similarly to how bookstores do. So it works for me.

There are some pretty good plugins for multimedia. I think they don't include them by default since multimedia users are a minority. Also for caching.

Their documentation is crap. That ought to be a beef right there on it's own. I've poked around the design of the innards. It's ugly. I've also examined the bug-handling process of the team. None of these things would have been acceptable at Expedia when I worked there, and we had some pretty bad software development practices.
